What if collateral could set a tone from the very first moment, inviting a certain mindset and subtly signalling that this is a place shaped by thought and taste.

This was the starting point. A shift away from materials that simply serve, toward pieces that reflect the people they are made for. An audience that is culturally aware, visually literate, and attentive to detail. Designing for that level of awareness is a privilege. It invites a more deliberate approach. Where the interplay of elements carries more weight than any single component.

The inspiration began with the building itself. Its iconic footprint, a rounded triangle set within the Boston skyline at One Dalton, introduced a distinct geometry. This form became the foundation for a broader principle that shaped the system across every touchpoint. From composition and layout to colour and language, a rhythm of three brought cohesion and clarity without becoming prescriptive.

AESTHETICS

Independent elements that act as the ingredients for the brand.

Colour became the primary expression of energy. Inspired by Boston’s academic culture and strong sense of identity, the palette draws from the familiarity of school colours, reinterpreted with restraint. Bold and confident, yet carefully balanced. The intention was to reflect a space that feels active and engaged, rather than quiet or reserved in the traditional sense of luxury.

Across the system, detail carries meaning. Patterns derived from the “1D” monogram unfold through die-cut forms and considered layouts. Typography and copy follow the same measured rhythm, while production techniques such as foil stamping and debossing introduce a tactile layer that reveals itself the closer you look. These were the softer moments designed for those who notice.

The result is a system that settles naturally into its environment. It does not compete for attention, but holds it through clarity and intention. Energetic, yet composed. Distinct, yet appropriate to its setting. A reflection of a guest who values substance, and a hotel that meets that standard with confidence.

Project Overview

Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street sits within a city shaped by ideas, where a rich educational and cultural heritage continues to drive progress in medicine, technology, business, and the arts. We developed a flexible collateral system that could give the hotel a stronger expression of its own, both within the Four Seasons portfolio and among Boston hotels—bringing greater character, intelligence, and energy to the touchpoints that shape the guest experience.

The Challenge

The opportunity was to define what luxury could look and feel like specifically for the One Dalton guest. The hotel needed to retain the refinement and quality expected of Four Seasons while speaking to an audience with different expectations of luxury. Rather than relying on traditional codes, the system needed to feel confident, intelligent, and expressive, with every design decision grounded in a clear rationale.

Our Approach

Creating an expression specific to One Dalton meant first understanding who we were designing for. From there, we looked to the character of Boston itself, and the relationship between the city, its guests, and their shared sense of progress and possibility.

Understanding the One Dalton Guest

Through research, we identified a distinct guest profile: modern movers and shakers defined by influence, purpose, and confidence. They expect the quality and service of Four Seasons, but their idea of luxury is less traditional—more individual, culturally aware, and connected to the world around them.

These are leaders, thinkers, and creators accustomed to shaping the world around them. The design needed to meet them with the same level of confidence, creating moments of discovery and detail rather than relying on expected expressions of luxury.

Building in Variation

The system was designed to be bold, but never fixed. Colour, typography, pattern, and graphic elements create a recognisable visual language that can be continually reinterpreted—allowing One Dalton to shift its expression without losing its identity.

Seasonal patterns introduce newness throughout the year, while different spaces call for different levels of expression. In quieter experiences such as the spa, the system shifts toward materiality, finish, and tone. Rather than repeating itself, the system was built to continually change, giving guests something new to discover while remaining distinctly One Dalton.

Outcome

The resulting visual system gives One Dalton a distinct identity shaped around the people who experience it. Across collateral and guest touchpoints, it offers a more contemporary expression of luxury, one that reflects the confidence and curiosity of its guests while remaining grounded in the quality and sophistication of Four Seasons.

Built to evolve across seasons, spaces, and experiences, the system gives the hotel the flexibility to continually introduce new expressions without losing its point of view. The result is an identity that feels distinctly One Dalton: considered, confident, and created for the people who call it their Four Seasons in Boston.
