How do you redesign an entire luxury resort experience?
Before designing, we observed and listened.
The biggest challenge wasn’t a lack of experiences.
More isn’t always better
A resort should feel like one connected experience.
The best hospitality design supports both guests and staff.
The future of a great resort is often hidden in plain sight.
There is a particular complexity that comes with working on an established luxury resort. When a property is brand new, the work begins with possibility. The architecture, operating procedures, guest journey, and brand experience can often be shaped together from the beginning, with every touchpoint designed as part of a single vision. An operating resort is different. It already has rhythms, relationships, habits, departments, loyal guests, staff, and years of accumulated decisions that have helped shape what the property has become.
This was the opportunity presented to us at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai in Hoi An, Vietnam. Set across 27 hectares of beachfront property, The Nam Hai is one of the most distinctive resorts in the Four Seasons portfolio, with suites and villas arranged in thoughtful clusters that embrace both privacy and connection to the sea. As the resort approached its tenth year as part of Four Seasons, it was also moving through a multi-year renovation plan intended to prepare the property for its next chapter.
Unlike many hospitality projects that focus on a single touchpoint, our scope encompassed the resort as a whole. The Agency of Love and Logic (LOLO) was invited to reimagine everything from hotel collateral and wayfinding signage to the Spa, the dining portfolio, and the broader ecosystem of guest experiences, including cultural, educational, and conservation-led programmes. The challenge was not simply to refresh individual elements, but to create greater cohesion across the many moments that shape a guest's understanding of the property.
Understanding Before Designing
Why does hospitality design begin with operations?
There is a particular complexity that comes with working on an established luxury resort. When a property is brand new, the work begins with possibility. The architecture, operating procedures, guest journey, and brand experience can often be shaped together from the beginning, with every touchpoint designed as part of a single vision. An operating resort is different. It already has rhythms, relationships, habits, departments, loyal guests, staff, and years of accumulated decisions that have helped shape what the property has become.
During our time on property, we met with every department, including front office, housekeeping, spa, food and beverage, recreation, procurement, guest experience, marketing, children’s programming, and marine conservation. Each team had its own needs, challenges, rituals, and responsibilities. Each also played a role in shaping how the guest understood the resort. These conversations reminded us that while branding and design are often created with the guest in mind, the experience itself is delivered by the people who operate the property every day.
Operational understanding is essential to hospitality design because the designs must work for staff as well as guests.
That became one of the most important principles of the project. If a system does not work for the team, it will not be implemented with care. In luxury hospitality, that care is everything. The staff were the hosts of the place, and our responsibility was to create tools that supported their work, reflected their pride, and helped them share the resort with greater ease.
Clarity Within Abundance
What Happens When a Resort Offers Too Many Experiences?
What we discovered through the process was that The Nam Hai was not lacking in experiences. In fact, it had the opposite challenge. There was an extraordinary amount for guests to explore, and that abundance created its own form of complexity.
This became even more apparent as we mapped the guest journey and developed profiles that reflected the different ways people experience a resort. Some guests arrive seeking movement and discovery, while others are looking for stillness and restoration. Families require a different rhythm of communication than couples, and first-time visitors often navigate the property differently than returning guests. Not every guest needs the same information in the same way, but every guest should experience the resort through a system that feels intuitive and consistent.
The challenge
The challenge was not the abundance of experiences, but how guests discovered them. Over time, different departments had developed their own methods of engaging guests. Each was created with thoughtful intention, yet together they formed a growing ecosystem of information that could feel fragmented and, at times, overwhelming.
Our role was not to add more, but to make what already existed easier to discover. By examining the entire communication ecosystem, from the information itself to the format, placement, and timing of its delivery, we identified opportunities to simplify, consolidate, and reorganise materials into a more intuitive experience for both guests and staff.
This thinking extended beyond the content itself and into the way guests encountered it throughout their stay. In guest rooms, for example, we developed a curated tray system that organised resort materials and invited guests to explore them at their own pace. Rather than competing for attention, information could be discovered naturally, reflecting our broader goal of making exploration feel effortless rather than overwhelming.
Whether through wayfinding, guest collateral, activity guides, or wellness communications, each touchpoint was designed to work in harmony with the resort’s architecture, interiors, and service philosophy.
Dining and wellness are often managed as separate business units, but guests rarely perceive them that way. Each experience contributes to their understanding of the property and their overall impression of the stay.

A Dining Ecosystem, Not Individual Outlets
Food and beverage became an especially important part of the refresh because dining plays such a central role in the resort experience. At a property of this scale, guests will inevitably dine on property during their stay, making each restaurant an important touchpoint within the broader guest journey.
Rather than approaching the restaurants as independent brands, we considered the dining portfolio as a connected ecosystem. Through naming, positioning, and visual identity, each outlet was given a distinct role and personality while remaining connected to the broader story of The Nam Hai.
Newly renovated venues such as Nayuu and Sol & Sao provided opportunities to build identities from the ground up. Nayuu was conceived as an intimate omakase destination centred on craftsmanship and culinary discovery, while Sol & Sao embraced a more relaxed and social atmosphere inspired by its beachfront setting.
For long-standing venues such as La Sen, our approach was more nuanced. Rather than reinventing an experience guests already knew and loved, we focused on refining its personality and strengthening its role within the portfolio. Café Nam Hai was similarly positioned to ensure it occupied a distinct place within the resort's culinary offering.
While the level of intervention varied from outlet to outlet, the objective remained the same: to ensure guests could intuitively understand the role of each dining experience and choose the one that best suited their mood, occasion, and moment within their stay.
Shaping a Wellness Experience Rooted in Interbeing
Heart of the Earth Spa presented a different kind of challenge. The spa was already built on a beautiful and deeply meaningful foundation inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh's philosophy of interbeing. Our role was not to reinvent that idea, but to shape a wellness experience that felt both accessible and authentic to its origins.
For some guests, the philosophy behind the spa would become an opportunity for deeper exploration and reflection. For others, it simply needed to create a sense of restoration and calm. The challenge was ensuring the brand experience could hold both possibilities at once, offering enough depth to honour the concept while remaining welcoming to guests seeking a spa treatment during their stay.
The result was a wellness experience that felt layered but not complicated, meaningful but never heavy, and reflective of the quiet care that sits at the heart of both the spa and The Nam Hai.
A Foundation for the Next Decade
What is the role of design in an established luxury resort?
The project unfolded over two years, progressing alongside the realities of an operating resort. Guest service, renovations, training, and daily operations inevitably took precedence, requiring the work to move in phases rather than all at once. While this demanded patience and flexibility from everyone involved, it also ensured that the solutions were shaped by the realities of the property rather than developed in isolation.
Looking back, the most valuable lesson was that great hospitality design is rarely about creating something entirely new. More often, it is about revealing and strengthening what already exists.
At The Nam Hai, the culture, care, and generosity of spirit were already present in abundance. They could be found in the warmth of the staff, the richness of the programming, the thoughtfulness of the wellness experience, and the countless interactions that guests carry home with them long after their stay.
Our role was to create greater clarity around those experiences and help them work together as a cohesive whole. Through the refinement of dining concepts, wellness experiences, resort communications, guest collateral, and wayfinding systems, we helped establish a foundation for the resort's next decade: one that honours the people, stories, and sense of place that have always made The Nam Hai exceptional.
